2015: A Snapshot by Justin Greenwood

image

I remember talking to my wife when deciding to go freelance a few years back and knowing that 2015 would be the year that kicked my ass. But standing on the tail end of it, I’ll remember it as one I can be proud of, and was only able to manage with help of many good friends and collaborators.

These comics all came out this year. In fairness, some of them had already been in progress and the COTD story was just a 5 pager I did with my pal Landry Walker but still, it represents a lot of drawing this year.

I get nostalgic and reflective in the week between Christmas and New Years, always have. Just wanted to take a minute to thank my partners @antonyjohnston, @ruckawriter and @marcguggenheim, and all the collaborators that make our books great. To my publishers @onipress and @imagecomics, and the hard working teams who work behind the scenes to get these books out. To my wife and family for patiently supporting me as I make my way in this career.

And an enormous thanks to the retailers and folks who buy our comics and allow us to tell stories for a living. It’s a blessing, and I can speak for everyone when I saw how much we appreciate the support.

Happy New Years, friends.

We at Oni Press know how incredibly difficult it is to shop for friends and family around the holidays. There’s always that second cousin twice removed with fuzzy interests, the sister-in-law that sorta likes knitting (or was it deep-sea fishing?), or the office co-worker who hasn’t updated their Facebook like pages in a million years. How are you supposed to get them a gift if they won’t update their Facebook like pages?!?

 Good morning, gentle readers!
BLACK MAGICK #1 FOC’s THIS COMING MONDAY, OCTOBER 5!
As the handy image, created by our hyper-talented designer Eric Trautmann, above shows, this comes in three flavors:
A 40-page ad-free comic with a cover by Nicola Scott, featuring some fun bonuses, including part one of a new piece of fiction from Greg Rucka.
A 40-page ad-free comic with a cover by Jill Thompson, with all the same goodies as above.
A 64-PAGE AD-FREE MAGAZINE-SIZE COMIC (I put that in all caps because it’s literally and figuratively huge and we’re all very proud of it), featuring a cover by Rick Burchett and Romulo Fajardo, with ALMOST 30 PAGES OF BONUS MATERIAL.
Retailers, make sure you get those orders in, and readers, talk to you
friendly neighborhood comic shop and ask them to pre-order the book for
you, so you guarantee yourself a copy.
And please feel free to utilize the handy ask button that’s up there somewhere if you have any questions or comments.
 See you in October!

 OK, two things.
First, there is a BLACK MAGICK tumblr, that is being curated by our amazing editor (editrix? I just like using words with ‘x’s in them…), Jeanine Schaefer ( karatemonkey ). You should totally follow that, because it might  have some cool stuff about the comic, but mostly because Jeanine is Awesome, and she didn’t pay me to say that about her or anything and I swear I’m working as fast as I can but a lot of work stacked up while I was in Australia and I’m behind…
Thing Second, there seems to have been some sort of confusion  with Diamond as to what covers were being offered and where and how. So the thing, here, is that these are the three versions of the book that are being offered for sale . These have always been the three versions of the book that we were planning to offer for sale .
Regular comic A - 40 pages, cover by Nic.
Regular comic B - 40 pages, cover by Jill Thompson.
Magazine version - 64 pages, cover by Rick Burchett.
I know, I just repeated exactly what was in the initial post. I believe in being thorough.
We are, as you might imagine, very proud of these.
 Hope you dig ‘em!

RCCC 2015 by Justin Greenwood

Hey, I’m going to be a returning guest of Rose City Comic Con (rosecitycomiccon) this weekend and I’m pumped about spending a little time in Portland again. I had a great time at this show last year and looking forward to Round 2, so drop by and say hello!

You can find me at table K-13.

I’m coming with a bunch of gear this year, lots of original art and sketches for sale alongside books like THE FUSE, STUMPTOWN and fresh copies of STRINGERS #1. I’ll also be taking on a couple commissions at the show so let me know if you want to be on that list.

I’ll also be at appearing at these signings/events:

Saturday- 5pm signing at Oni Press (onipress) Booth #607

Sunday- 11:30 am Panel “Image Comics: Where Creators Own Everything”
Room: Panel Room 3

Sunday- 1:00 pm signing at Oni Press  (onipress) Booth #607

Long Beach Comic Con by Justin Greenwood

Just a quick note that I’m going to be a guest of Long Beach Comic Con this weekend! It’s my first time attending the show, really excited to check it out. I’ll be bringing a selection of original art and sketches, plus a slew of books including THE FUSE, STUMPTOWN and the recently debuted STRINGERS #1 from onipress! And series writer marcguggenheim will be around at the show as well so it’s a good time to catch both of us at once.

Also, I’ll be on a panel on Saturday at 3:30 called “CREATING YOUR OWN STYLE”, talking about drawing style and design. There is a live drawing demo portion as well, and I think jimmie-robinson is on the panel too- what more do you need?!? Drop by and check it out.

THE FUSE #14 ON SALE

THE FUSE #14 goes on sale this week, as the new story arc ‘Perihelion’ gathers steam!

The Fuse’s annual day of chaos continues! Murder, riots, theft, politics, terrorism — and a break in the “haircut killer” case for Klem and Ralph!

As I mentioned before, this arc is a little different to previous stories in THE FUSE. Instead of following Klem and Ralph for a single case over several days, in Perihelion we’re following them through a singly day, but dealing with multiple cases (only some of which will be murders) on the annual ‘day of chaos’.

It’s all rather exciting.

THE FUSE #14 is available from all good comics stores with the order code JUL150558, or you can get it digitally from Comixology and Image Comics

STRINGERS #2 Pre-Order Reminder by Justin Greenwood

Final Order Cut-off for STRINGERS #2 from onipress is coming up on Monday, so just a reminder to let your local comic shop know you want a copy! The response to issue #1 have been overwhelming, and we can’t thank you guys enough for all the great feedback we’ve been getting on our book.

From the solicit:

Writer: Marc Guggenheim (marcguggenheim)

Artist: Justin Greenwood (justingreenwood)

Colors: Ryan Hill

Letters: Crank!

DIAMOND CODE: JUL151489

Nick and Paul hastily flee a shootout, leaving with their footage and a mysterious USB drive taken off a gang member. They quickly get pulled over by the cops, and Nick suspects something wrong is happening… why are the cops interested in them now, when they’ve been at countless shootouts before? Paul disagrees, but Nick is the one behind the wheel, which means that a high-speed chase through LAX is going to happen whether Paul likes it or not. But dodging the police doesn’t mean they’re out of danger… not when they’ve also royally ticked off a rival stringer.

What people are saying:

“Marks a promising debut, and one that doesn’t read like any Guggenheim comic before it.” - IGN
“The art by Justin Greenwood and Ryan Hill is beautiful and speaks to Los Angeles better than I have seen in a while.” - Graphic Policy
“The book is a great example of what can be done with comics outside of the traditional tights and powers tropes.” - Comic Crusaders

And as if that’s not enough, make sure you check out this killer variant cover by Brahm Revel (elrevel) below. Love the energy he packed into this composition!

STRINGERS #1 is on stands TODAY! by Justin Greenwood

Even writing this title line has me pinching myself- many comics have long periods of devlopment but this one really takes the cake. I think Marc started on this concept nearly 7 years ago and we probably started collaborating on it as far back as 2010, when we started wrapping up RESURRECTION at that time. So believe me when I say how excited and proud we are to have this book on shelves today. It was the first creator-owned book I got to build from the ground up and will remain one of my favorites.

BIG thanks to onipress for working with us and being so flexible as to make sure it saw the light of day, and to my longtime collaborator and pal Marc Guggenheim for his patience and support. This comic has been a passion project from the outset and time has only made me appreicate it that much more. Hope you guys enjoy it.

From the solicit:

Writer: Marc Guggenheim (marcguggenheim)

Artist: Justin Greenwood (justingreenwood)

Colors: Ryan Hill

Letters: Crank!

Paul and Nick are the guys who shoot the news. Filming car chases, fires, and shootouts in their busted-up rig, they put their (uninsured, unsalaried) lives on the line every night so that the good citizens of Los Angeles can get their daily update. But when a firefight between the LAPD and the MS-13 goes wrong, Nick and Paul find themselves on the run.

STUMPTOWN #7 is on sale this week! by Justin Greenwood

The Case of a Cup of Joe continues this Wednesday from onipress! The solicit says it all:

“Dex is in possession of $30,000 dollars worth of coffee beans. It gets weirder from there.”

Written by Greg Rucka (ruckawriter), Drawn by Justin Greenwood (justingreenwood), Colors by Ryan Hill and Letters by Crank!

Check out a few pages from the issue below.

StocktonCon 2015 by Justin Greenwood

I’m headed out to God’s Country this weekend for my 2nd annual StocktonCon! This show started small but has been growing rapidly from year to year, really looking forward to attending.

You can find me there at Table AA5 on Saturday and Sunday.

I will have a slew of books on hand, as well as copies of the partially released THE FUSE #13- this issue was delayed by a week due to transportation issues by the distributor so many Bay Area stores have been waiting on it. Drop by and get your copy!

Oni Press Solicitations for October include STRINGERS #3 and STUMPTOWN #9! by Justin Greenwood

Now available for Pre-Order in the newest copy of PREVIEWS:

STRINGERS #3

Writer: Marc Guggenheim (marcguggenheim)

Artist: Justin Greenwood (justingreenwood)

Colors: Ryan Hill

Letters: Crank!

After barely escaping from Speziali unscathed (well, maybe some scathes) by tricking him into taking a blank tape, Nick and Paul drop off their actual footage at the news station with Michelle. During their late-night slurpee break, Paul breaks the news he’s being holding onto: he’s going to USC to get his degree and become a “legitimate journalist.” Nick is less than pleased, but it turns out that Speziali had the worst night… those cops came back, and Nick was right: they were definitely crooked. They put Speziali in the hospital searching for the tape, and now Nick, Paul, and Michelle are in danger.
