STUMPTOWN VOLUME 4 is on sale this week! by Justin Greenwood

So excited to have STUMPTOWN Volume 4 in stores on Wednesday from @onipress! This volume collects the most recent PDX coffee caper THE CASE OF A CUP OF JOE and THE CASE OF THE NIGHT THAT WOULDN’T END, our mostly silent stakeout issue.

Coffee, Crime and more than a little bit of Cunning- this one has it all.

We are very proud of this collection and glad to see it finally on shelves. This hard cover features a great round table type discussion with Greg, Ryan and myself plus lots of new process material to check out. I had an insanely good time drawing this book- Greg had me frequently laughing out loud while working on this, but somehow never let it get in the way of some very poignant, beautiful moments in these stories. Really fun (and challenging) stuff to draw.

GREG RUCKA @ruckawriter (W) • JUSTIN GREENWOOD @justingreenwood (A/CA) • RYAN HILL ( C ) • CRANK ( L )

There is a good interview HERE on @comicosit with the whole team talking about the collaboration and storytelling in this volume.

You can also find a handful of some of my favorite original art from this volume up at my site HERE.

STUMPTOWN #10 hits stands today! by Justin Greenwood

THE CASE OF THE NIGHT THAT WOULDN’T END arrives in stores today from @onipress! It’s a standalone case, a one-in-done story following Dex on a late night stakeout.

STUMPTOWN #10 is the first time in a long while where I got to draw a complete story in one issue and also a comic that is mostly silent, both things that make for a really satisfying, fun to draw issue.

Greg (@ruckawriter) absolutely killed it with this story, putting together one of my favorite scripts to date and Ryan brought a great, moody vibe with the colors as we watch Dex struggle to figure out who is doing what with whom.

Here are the first pages that ran in the preview circulating online:

After barely escaping from Speziali unscathed (well, maybe some scathes) by tricking him into taking a blank tape, Nick and Paul drop off their actual footage at the news station with Michelle. During their late-night slurpee break, Paul breaks the news he’s being holding onto: he’s going to USC to get his degree and become a “legitimate journalist.” Nick is less than pleased, but it turns out that Speziali had the worst night… those cops came back, and Nick was right: they were definitely crooked. They put Speziali in the hospital searching for the tape, and now Nick, Paul, and Michelle are in danger.

STUMPTOWN V3 #3 is out this week! by Justin Greenwood

Stumptown #3 from onipress hits stands Wednesday! The case heats up when Dex runs across some familiar faces and for some, that might not make for such a friendly reunion.

Writer: Greg Rucka (ruckawriter)

Artist: Justin Greenwood (justingreenwood)

Colorist: Ryan Hill

Letters: Crank!

From the solicit:

With her friend Mercury still in a coma, Dex is taking things personally – perhaps too personally. As the investigation stalls, Dex begins to veer out of control, and there’s no telling who might get hurt in her wake.

Original art for STUMPTOWN #2 is now for sale! by Justin Greenwood

That’s riiiiight, the original art for STUMPTOWN #2 from onipress is now available for sale at ComiConArt! With my convention season over for a bit, I’m going to try and start getting the original pages up within a week of an issue’s release.

This also includes the above cover, maybe my favorite of the group. Originally I’d sketched it up as something more “montage-y” but ruckawriter came back with some specific ideas, something more direct and visceral and I like this version much better.

Check out most of the original pages from this issue HERE

comicswithtim:

Today onipress Stumptown #2 hit shelves. To mark its release, I interviewed ruckawriter and artist justingreenwood for cbr. Above are two pages from the issue included in the interview and below are excerpts from the creators’ larger discussion on the value of collaboration.

GreenwoodIt was equally as intimidating to submit my first round of page comps to Greg because I think there is something very personal in how you tell a story and if it doesn’t click with your collaborator, the project is going to be an uphill battle for the duration. And especially one like “Stumptown” (and specifically this arc), as it feels very genuine and personal. Thankfully we share that sensibility and it’s made working with Greg very easy, and in turn empowered me to be comfortable telling the story however I see it.

Rucka: …But, to be perfectly honest, it’s as much to me about finding a creative partner as it is about someone who can tell the story. The latter is crucial, of course, but it was clear to me from the get-go that Justin was a smart, engaged creator, that he would bring himself to the book, that he would engage, that he would participate and push for what he wanted, for what he thought would work. I crave that. I don’t want to be in a vacuum, you know? This is a collaborative medium, as I have said again and again and again to anyone who will listen. That Justin is talented is a given. That he is a talented collaborator, that was what sealed the deal.”

We also discussed the how vital colorist

Big thanks to Tim O'Shea ( comicswithtim) for his recent interview with Greg (ruckawriter) and me for Comic Book Resources, waxing poetic about the new arc of STUMPTOWN! You can check out a few excerpts on Tim’s tumblr post above, or read the complete interview HERE.

And if you wanna get a peak at STUMPTOWN #2, you can catch a preview that went up at CBR today HERE.

STUMPTOWN V3 #2 and WASTELAND: The Apocalyptic Edition HC Vol. 4 are out this week! by Justin Greenwood

Two new books I worked on are on shelves Wednesday:

image

STUMPTOWN V3 #2 from onipress

Writer: Greg Rucka (ruckawriter)

Art: Justin Greenwood (justingreenwood)

Colors: Ryan Hill

Letters: Crank!

Very excited for this issue to come out. The plot thickens:

“After discovering her dear friend Mercury beaten to within an inch of his life, Dex is determined to find the culprit at any cost. But when her path again crosses with Seattle-based investigator C.K. Banes, will Dex have an ally or yet another obstacle?”

WASTELAND: THE APOCALYPTIC EDITION HC Volume 4 from onipress

Writer: Antony Johnston (antonyjohnston)

Art: Justin Greenwood (justingreenwood), Russel Roehling ( russelroehling), Christopher Mitten (christophermitten) and others

As proud as I am of having worked on this story, I’m particularly proud of this portion. These hard covers are among the nicest comics I own, really beautifully designed books. The adventure continues:

“The award-nominated sci-fi epic continues in this fourth deluxe hardcover! Michael and Abi walk on through the desert, but tensions between them could jeopardize the search for A-Ree-Yass-I entirely… while in Newbegin, the arrival of the Children’s father heralds Marcus’ downfall. Reprinting issues #40 to #52 of Wasteland, this oversized volume also includes the final "Walking the Dust” stories, plus a special interlude issue and cover gallery by series co-creator Christopher Mitten! Written by Antony Johnston, with art by Russel Roehling and Justin Greenwood, featuring cover artwork from Christopher Mitten.“

We love “Stumptown” around these parts. I say that not just because I am currently sitting in a hotel in Portland, but because Dex Parios is amongst the greatest creations of Greg Rucka’s career, and because it’s a book that has so much fun with such clever…

Lots of new “first look" art here in this interview with Greg and Multiversity Comics about the upcoming return of STUMPTOWN! And peep this cover art with colors by Ryan Hill, pretty sweet stuff.
